Trip to the Loire Valley
Loire Valley, France
OCTOBER 2017. Several members of the Club des Leaders attended this trip, which had been magnificently organized by the late Gonzague St-Bris. A truly royal programme awaited us. On our first evening we enjoyed dinner with Prince Louis-Albert de Broglie at his home, the Château de la Bourdaisière. The celebrated historian Philippe Delorme gave us a most interesting talk and stayed with us for the remainder of the trip. The following morning we visited the Château de Chenonceaux before having lunch with the Marquis and Marquise de Vibraye at the Château de Cheverny. In the afternoon we were lucky to have the park of the Château de Chambord all to ourselves and even managed to spot some wild animals. The evening that followed was quite unforgettable. The Count and Countess Jean d'Haussonville, the Comte being Chambord's manager, welcomed us in the main courtyard to the sound of hunting horns. The royal castle had been cleared of all visitors and we were able to visit the rooms at leisure before attending a banquet in the Trophy Hall. Dinner was also attended by Princess Léa de Belgique and Princess Charles-Emmanuel de Bourbon Parme. An early start the next morning proved rather difficult but we were all charmed by the Pagode de Chanteloup that used to be Choiseul's home and was also dearly loved by Gonzague Saint Bris. We had only to cross a poplar avenue to discover Château Gaillard, a Renaissance bijou nestled in Amboise. We were welcomed by its owner Marc Lelandais who has made a wonderful job in restauring the castle and its gardens. It was a pleasant surprise to have lunch on the premises and taste dishes of the Renaissance. The bravest members of our group visited the Château d'Amboise with its curator Jean-Louis Sureau. The more futile minded strolled the streets of Amboise and went shopping, while poor Jean-Sébastien tried to gather everyone to prepare for dinner at Clos Lucé. It was very moving to visit the castle, home of Gonzague Saint Bris, and enjoy a Renaissance dinner prepared by Sieur Sausin. Nonetheless the evening ended on a happy note and it was rather difficult to regroup the next morning and go off to visit first the Château d'Ussé in Anjou and then the château de Brissac, which is the tallest in France. We had lunch with its owner the marquis de Brissac, who gave us a tour of the most beautiful rooms of the house.
Last but not least we ended our tour by visiting the château de Serrant, where we were welcomed by the Prince and Princess de Merode. It was time to take our leave, some of us being privileged enough to fly back home on a private plane....
